How To Check Boat Engine Oil
Saturday, October 10th, 2009
You have to check your boat engine oil regularly to maintain the vessel in running condition. You should check whether the oil is low while noting its quality. Use the following steps to learn how to check boat engine oil properly.
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
Step 1
Wipe off the engine oil with a light colored rag and to check the oil’s color. Pull out the oil dipstick. The engine oil dipstick is generally color coded yellow at the top.
Step 2
Hold the oil end of the dipstick against the light colored rag. If the oil comes up to the “Full” line, your engine oil is fine. If it only comes up to the “Low” line, you need more oil.
Step 3
Wipe the oil off the dipstick onto the rag. If your oil is dark or you notice tiny particles like dirt or sand, change the oil. If the oil is a caramel color, the oil is fine. Check the engine oil before each boat outing. Checking the oil frequently allows you to detect leaks or low engine oil early so you can add oil or get the leak fixed before the engine is damaged.
